Suicide: Military personnel at higher risk

Young men leaving the armed forces at 2-3 times more likely to commit suicide.

A study of 233, 803 personnel leaving the UK military forces between 1996
and 2005 reported that young men aged 24 and younger have been found to
be at greater risk of suicide – two to three times higher than for the same age groups in the general population and those still serving
in the forces (Kapur et al, 2009).

The risk was greater among males, those with a short service and those of lower rank.
